NC rabbi believed he recovered from COVID-19, then symptoms returned

CARY, N.C. — A rabbi in North Carolina is spending Passover at home after he got sick with the coronavirus, but thought he’d recovered before showing symptoms again.

Rabbi Yisorel Cotlar of the Chabad of Cary said he believes he picked up the virus in March after visiting New Jersey.

our days after he got home, he and his entire family got sick.

“Unfortunately, as you hear from so many people, it took 11 days to get those results,” Cotlar said. “By day four or five, I had a pretty good feeling it was positive.”

The rabbi said once his symptoms subsided, he thought he was out of the woods so he started to go back to his routine. That’s when he said it hit him again, even harder.

Unfortunately, I did have a relapse about four days later,” Cotlar said. “As I thought I was all over it, the symptoms all came back a little bit worse. My fever was even higher at that point.”

The rabbi is telling the faithful that virtual celebrations are better than none at all.

“I know myself will be focused on the blessings that I have,” Cotlar said. “Very thankful to have a Passover with my family. I think that’s the good general message to the family. We can be stuck at home or we can be safe at home.”
